Contrary to what some might believe there is a difference between fire doors and fire exit doors. Fire exit signs are not a requirement if it is obvious where the exit is for example when there is just one door at the front of a small shop where it is clear that would be the means of escape. For more complex buildings however fire exit signs are a necessity. If the direction of travel to the exit or exit discharge is not immediately apparent signs must be posted along the exit access indicating the direction of travel to the nearest exit and exit discharge.

Exit routes must support the maximum permitted occupant load for each floor served and the capacity of an exit route may not decrease in the direction of exit route travel to the exit discharge. Each exit route door must be free of decorations or signs that obscure the visibility of the exit route door. Ceilings of exit routes must be at least 7 feet 6 inches high. Fire doors are inside buildings residential and commercial and are internal doors that need to be kept closed in order to stop the spread of fire between different areas of a building. The nfpa emergency exit door requirements code states there is a maximum travel distance allowed to find an exit.
