Much of the mud is mixed with bentonite a soft clay which is key to the excavation process because it expands to prevent the collapse of an area during drilling. Manual or mechanical digging methods are labor intensive and potentially damaging to underground utilities. Hydro excavation is a similar process but using pressurized water instead of air. Similarly a hydro vacuum service is used to suck up all the hydro excavation waste as you go transferring the soil and dirt into a tank for disposal later.

When applicable hydro excavation greatly enhances workplace safety and excavation efficiency. This equipment combines with a vacuum system and a debris tank to fully remove displaced soil when necessary. Many operations prefer hydro excavation because it is more powerful more precise and therefore faster. The by products of hydro excavation are chemicals and slurry which are difficult to dispose of or reuse responsibly.
